The 5th and 4th graders just got done with a weaving lesson where they learned terms such as warp and weft. The 4th graders did a radial weave on a paper plate. The 5th graders used straws to create a weaving that many of them used for scarves or a bookmark.

Mercersburg had a Architecture: It's Elementary day! where the kids got to understand how architecture and engineering play in important role in how our world works. The Art station studied various architecture styles from around the world and created their own magnet. This is one of my favorites. I liked how she put in the Greek columns! The ancient Greeks invented three types of columns that were used all over ancient Greece. The columns were placed to support a building, but also adjusted in size and angle and in footage from each other, so that from a distance, the columns looked perfectly symmetrical. For more information on the Greeks visit http://greece.mrdonn.org/(http://greece.mrdonn.org/arts.html) The Tuscarora Wildlife Education Project (TWEP/Charles Brightbill Environmental Center) and Mercersburg Council for the Arts (MCFA) will again be sponsoring its annual “Elementary Animal Art Show” this winter. The show will be displayed at the Brightbill Environmental Center (located behind JBHS). Feb 5, 2012 (This Sunday)
PTO Art Fair and Family Art Night at Montgomery Elementary School.
We had a great turn out for this event. The art room was filled with families! The PTO put on a wonderful art fair, Ms. Piper and her friends were face painting, Mr. Izer did awesome balloon animals and Ms. Gillespie and Ms. Martin helped me with a craft in the Art Room. Thanks to all who attended and help make this night possible! Please look at our pictures. All these images were put on with parent permission. This school year (2011-2012) the first graders made paper butterflies and sent them to Mexico! Every November millions of monarch butterflies migrate to their overwintering sites in the mountains of Mexico. At the same time, symbolic paper monarchs made by school children from the United States and Canada find their way to students living in the monarch sanctuary area. These symbolic butterflies build bridges of communication between students in Mexico, the United States, and Canada. http://www.learner.org/jnorth/tm/symbolic/html/MexicoOverview.html
I had to be out for a day and the sub did a great job playing the coil pot game with the 5th graders!
They had 25 minutes. All the pots were between 10 and 13 inches high, with the orange table winning at 13". Blue table was right behind at 12.5". Art is a way to communicate. Young children explore what they are thinking and feeling through their art efforts. By being attentive to a child's work, listening as they "explain", you are building their understanding of art as a method of communicating with others. Of equal importance, you are creating a feeling within your child that what they have to say has value since you are taking the time to listen.
(KinderArt) The first graders tracked a sea turtle after it was rescued and rehabilitated. Flight and Release was released from Assateague State Park on Saturday, September 19, 2009 in conjunction with Maryland Coastal Bays Program's Maryland Coast Day event.
